Touchdown!
To be an official Husker fan, one must be able to deliver a beyond-adequate celebratory touch down ("TOUCHDOWN!"). Otherwise, you're kicked off the team. Nuff said. Especially that first touch down of the game - it's a pretty big deal. Because when the ball crosses over the line and you're the only one NOT jumping off the couch carelessly, your food bowl dumped on the floor, your drink spilled and the infamous high-five and "Woot!" around the room, well then, who are you and why are you in my basement?
One of my favorite memories as a child was hosting Husker games at our house in Bellevue on Denise Circle. We'd invite all of my dad's buddies over and we'd gear up for the game with popcorn, veneson sausage and cheese slices, chili or pizza and beer. Everyone had their spot picked out on either one of the sofas or the yellow shag carpet. The TV would be blaring so loud, the crashing sounds from the Husker band or the game announcers would travel with you no matter which room you were in or floor you were on. The only difference was that most games back then led to a national championship play-off. Haha.
Anyway, Jaxon, being the Husker fan that he is...naturally...and being of the appropriate age and know-how, we decided it was time to teach him "the touchdown." :)
Jaxon had pretty much nailed down the following words to-date: Dada (daddy), Mehmeh (mommy), boh (ball), Dahyah (Dasha, our dog), doddee (all other dogs who are not Dasha), baybee (baby), oh-oh-oh (uh-oh), ah-ga (interchangeable for all gone or all done), wee-see (hmm...we're still not sure) and a plethora of other sounds that make up Jaxon's vocab.
At dinner one evening at home, Kyle and I just started repeating ourselves and screaming with excitement, "TOUCHDOWN! JAXON, TOUCHDOWN!" over and over. After a few times, we stopped and the kitchen was silent. Our baby was staring at us with his big blue eyes wide open, confused and concerned for us. The only thought that seemed to be looming through his brain was...FREAKS. And then....a smile...both arms flung straight up in the air...and suddenly..."TUD-DOW!" It was adorable. And he seemed very proud of himself as he looked left-to-right at Kyle and I grinning ear-to-ear.
Now, Jaxon gives a "touch down" on command. It's cute! We snapped a video of it one time. Check it out here:
