Jaxon Gabriel Bruss has arrived!!!

Introducing the newest addition to the Bruss clan...Jaxon Gabriel Bruss! Born August 1, 2010 at 2:12p.m. via emergency C-section at BryanLGH East in Lincoln, Nebraska. He weighs 6 lbs 3 oz and is 18 inches long. Mom, Dad and Baby are all doing very well today!

Here is our story....

After attending a friend's wedding on Saturday night a few miles outside of Lincoln, we stopped at Sonic for a blizzard on the way home. Beth noticed she hadn't felt much movement from Jaxon in awhile, but we thought the blizzard would do the trick. Unfortunately it did not, but we thought, "well, he's just tired and is experiencing a sleepy spell," so we went to bed. Beth woke up about 8:30 on Sunday morning, August 1st, still noticing no movement from the baby through the night. Knowing what the doctor would advise to her if she had called with any concern, she drank an ice-cold sugary drink and laid down on her left side for about an hour. Unfortunately, the baby hadn't moved once in her tummy during that hour so we decided to call the on-call doctor to see what they thought we should do next, or if there was any reason for concern. Thanks to an early baby gift from Sue (Kyle's stepmom), we were able to listen to the baby's heartbeat at home, and he seemed to be doing just fine with a heartbeat around 162, which was a huge relief.  It was a little higher than normal, but beating very strongly. This made both of us feel much better. Beth called the doctor and after telling her about the past 15 or so hours of events, they advised us to head into the hospital to get some tests ran to know more. I think everyone involved thought we may just be paranoid and we'd probably get sent home shortly after getting there.

We got to the hospital at about 10am. They ran several tests on Beth and the baby. After about 2 hours of tests and some sugary treats, and no change in the baby, the doctor ordered an ultrasound test where they tested the baby on 5 different areas on a 10 point scale for a half hour. 10 points means everything is going perfectly, but unfortunately, baby Jaxon only scored 2 points. He did not move the entire half-hour of the ultrasound test which began to make us panic a bit. Dr. Eisenhower decided it was time to bring Jaxon into this world because they didn't know why he wasn't responding, so she immediately began to tell us about what would happen next to prepare for an emergency C-section. We gave each other a kiss and a hug, put our positivity hats on and began to pray and hope for the best outcome possible.

Everything happened so fast! Kyle was handed scrubs to change into while Beth was wheeled in separately to the ER to be robed and prepped for the spinal tab/epidural combo for the C-section surgery. We went into the room at 1:50p.m. and Jaxon was born at 2:12p.m. There were about 15 doctors and nurses running all around us and they said they hadn't done a C-section that fast in awhile. We held each others hands pretty tightly through the whole ordeal. Jaxon came out blue and wobbly and not breathing - they discovered the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck 4 times! They unwrapped the cord and the nurses whisked Jaxon away to a separate area in the room to work on him, while they sewed Beth up. We could hear them saying, "Breathe! Come on, breathe baby!" They did chest compressions and then stuck a tube down his throat to get him to breathe, but he didn't like that so they took it out and he suddenly began breathing on his own. :) Phew!

Baby Jaxon was taken down to the NICU where he still is today, but after a lot of love and care, he seems to be doing perfectly well now! A happy and healthy baby. He had a rough start into this world, but is a fighter with a strong heart and lungs. He's a very happy, beautiful and "chill" baby (let's hope he stays that way!). He was put through a lot in the beginning to get him to breathe - his little chest is sore from the chest compressions they did on him and his cry sounds kind of hoarse , but othewise he is just like any normal baby. They took the IV out today and took him out of the incubator and put him into a normal hospital crib. We think he'll be able to come up to our room tomorrow morning (Wednesday) we're hoping, and stay with us! Until then, we just continue to love and pray for him. He is such a good baby!

Beth is doing very well as she recovers from the surgery. She's got her feeling back in her legs now and is walking around somewhat pain-free thanks to the menu of "drugs" she is privy too. Kyle is a proud proud daddy and enjoying every moment he can get with Jaxon. We're both a little tired as we only got about 1.5 hours of sleep Sunday night and 4 hours of sleep last night. So, this is what parenthood is like? :) All in all though, we are doing great and are so happy to be spending so much time with our precious son! Didn't expect to become parents quite this soon or deliver in this way, but hey, it was all worth it and this was the way everything was meant to be. We are just happy that Bryan has such a good team of doctors and we had a happy ending! Things are going extremely well and it is looking like we all get to go home on Thursday.

See below for some pictures of the little man and our family. We will be periodically be posting updates to this blog, so please continue to logon and check it out!

We are in Room 511 at BryanLGH in case anyone is curious.

Love, Beth and Kyle
